Before the start of the project Columbia controlled Panama; however, they weren't that fond of the canal because it would eventually lead to relations with the U.S. So the U.S. supported the revolution of Panama from Columbia and in 1903 they gained independence. Panama agreed to sign a treaty with the U.S, which gave us the "Canal Zone"a 440 square mile area stretching across the isthmus. Ever notice how even when we don't try we still kinda look like bullies?
