Here's a breakdown of how the Canal works. 
Ships from the Atlantic Ocean pass throughout the Gatun locks. The locks lift vessels 85 ft to Gatun Lake. Ships then travel through the lake's channel for 23 miles and enter the Culebra Cut. Ships then go through the Pedro Miguel Locks, which lowers ships 30 ft into Miraflores Lake where ships travel through another channel. Ships travel to Miraflores locks, which lowers them back to sea level.
