I wish I lived during this era, they had it a bit easier than us. People resigned for everything.

John Findley Wallace was appointed chief engineer of the project by President Roosevelt. During his time he tried to excavate the spoil ( soil, dirt, etc) and begin to dig the canal; however, natural disasters set him back. Overall the project was not that successful during his leadership. Unhappy with the very little progress John Wallace resigned in June of 1905.
